The Maureen's Jewell Basketball Tournament is named in memory of Maureen Anken and Jewell Nelson, two extraordinary women, who showed courage and determination in their hard fought battle against cancer. Jewell was a great basketball fan and volunteer in area youth sports. Maureen was a standout basketball player and was inducted to the Plattsburgh State Sports Hall of Fame for her basketball greatness. A portion of the tournament proceeds is annually donated to the Maureen's Jewell Relay for life team. The Relay for Life is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money for research in the fight against cancer.
